Home repairs and carpentry in Delft and the surrounding area

Handyman and carpenter in Delft

AZD takes care of the repairs and odd jobs around the house: doors that stick, a rotten window sill, new skirting boards, a fence or garden gate, a TV on the wall or a wardrobe to assemble. We speak English, and because we are painters too, new wood and filled walls can be finished in the same visit.

How it works

From a list of jobs to a finished house

  1. Send us your list

Send the jobs by WhatsApp or the form, with a photo of each one if you can. From the photos we can often tell you straight away how we would tackle them and how long they will take.

  2. Visit or estimate

For a few small jobs we give an estimate in hours based on the photos. For larger carpentry we come and look first, free of charge, and you get a fixed price in writing.

  3. One visit, several jobs

We bring the tools and materials for everything on the list and work through it in one go. That keeps the travel time per job low.

  4. Finished and tidied up

Filled holes are sanded, new wood is primed, and we take the packaging and offcuts with us. Before we leave, we walk through the jobs with you.

What we do

Repairs, carpentry and mounting in and around the house

We work on existing homes: repairing, replacing, fitting and finishing. We do not do electrical installation, plumbing or tiling, and we do not take on new builds or large renovations.

Home repairs and odd jobs

The small things that pile up: a loose handle, a cupboard door that hangs crooked, a draught excluder, a sticking window, a loose threshold. Make a list, send a photo of each job and we do them in one visit.

Hanging and adjusting doors

Fitting and hanging a new interior door, replacing hinges and locks, or adjusting and shortening a door that sticks or drags over a new floor. We lacquer the cut edge again afterwards.

Window frames and sills

Replacing a rotten sill, part of a post or a glazing bead with new wood in the same profile, without removing the whole frame. Small rotten patches we repair with epoxy, see wood rot repair.

Skirting boards and boxing in

New skirting boards after a new floor, boxing in pipes, and finishing window reveals and sills. Afterwards we seal, fill and paint it all in one go, so nothing stays bare.

Fences and garden gates

Putting up or replacing a wooden fence, resetting loose posts and rehanging a garden gate that no longer closes. On request we stain or paint the wood at the same time.

Stairs and wooden cladding

Cladding an existing staircase with new treads and risers, and replacing loose or rotten boards of wooden cladding on the outside of the house in the same profile.

TV mounting and assembly

Mounting a TV bracket on a wall that can carry it, and assembling flat-pack furniture such as IKEA wardrobes, beds and cabinets, fixed to the wall where the instructions require it.

Shelves, rails and small wall repairs

Putting up shelves, curtain rails, blinds, mirrors and pictures with the right plugs for the wall. Filling holes and cracks so the wall is ready to paint, or painting it ourselves straight after.

Price

What determines the price of a handyman job

We don't give prices over the phone without knowing the jobs, because the wall, the wood and the amount of work only become clear from photos or a visit. Small jobs are charged by the hour, larger jobs at a fixed price after a free visit. These five things make the difference.

How many jobs in one visit

Travel and setting up cost the same for one job as for six. A list of jobs done in one visit costs less per job than calling us out for each one separately.

The type of wall or wood

A shelf in a brick or concrete wall needs drilling and the right plugs; plasterboard needs special fixings. Rotten wood only shows how far it goes once we probe it.

Materials

Hinges, locks, skirting boards, timber and fixings we can buy and list in the quote. If you have already bought the door, the bracket or the furniture, we fit what you have.

Finishing included or not

New wood needs primer and paint, and filled holes need sanding and a coat of paint. If you want us to finish it, that is a separate line in the quote, so you can see what the painting costs.

Access and height

A job at floor level or on a stepladder is quick. A garden gate at the back of a terraced house or a sill on the second floor takes more time and sometimes a scaffold.

Handyman and carpentry in Delft and the surrounding area

We work from Delft within a radius of roughly 45 kilometres. Besides Delft, we regularly work in The Hague, Rijswijk, Zoetermeer, Leiden, the Westland, Schiedam and Vlaardingen. All the places with their own page are listed under service area (in Dutch). Carpentry is often combined with painting or wood rot repair on the same house.

Good to know

What to know before you book a handyman

Bundle your jobs

Most of the cost of a small job is getting there and setting up. Keep a list on your phone and send it to us when it has a few items on it, with a photo of each. Then we bring the right materials and do everything in one visit, instead of coming back for the hinge we didn't know about.

Renting: ask your landlord first

Drilling holes, mounting a TV or changing a door in a rented home usually needs your landlord's permission, and at the end of the tenancy you may have to hand the home back as you received it. Ask before we start, and keep the reply. We fill and paint the holes when you move out, so the walls are ready for the handover inspection.

Apartments and VvE rules

In an apartment building the owners' association (VvE) decides about the outside: window frames, front doors, balconies and fences on shared ground. Changes there often need VvE approval, and some VvE's prescribe the colour. Inside your own apartment you can usually decide for yourself.

Which wall can carry a TV

Brick and concrete walls carry a TV bracket without problems if the right plugs are used. A plasterboard wall can carry less and needs special fixings, or a fixing into the studs behind it. We check the wall before drilling and look for pipes and cables with a detector. We don't move sockets or install new wiring.

Why new wood goes straight into paint

Bare wood takes up moisture within a few days, especially at the end grain. That moisture ends up under the paint and pushes it off. We prime new wood on the same day and finish it within a week. That is the advantage of a carpenter who also paints.

Repair or replace

A window frame rarely needs to come out completely. If only the sill or the bottom of a post is soft, we replace that part and leave the rest. A sticking door often just needs its hinges adjusted. We tell you on site what we would repair and what we would replace, and why.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about handyman jobs and carpentry

Do you speak English?

Yes. You can contact us in English by phone, WhatsApp or the form, and we discuss the jobs, the quote and the planning in English.

What does a handyman cost in Delft?

That depends on the jobs, the materials and how many jobs are done in one visit. Small jobs we charge by the hour, larger carpentry at a fixed price. Send us your list with photos, or we come and look first free of charge, and you get the price in writing before we start.

Do you charge by the hour or a fixed price?

For small jobs such as adjusting a door, hanging shelves or assembling a wardrobe, we charge by the hour. For work we can assess in advance, such as replacing a sill or putting up a fence, you get a fixed price. Which one applies is stated in the quote.

Can you do several small jobs in one visit?

Yes, and we recommend it. Send us the whole list with a photo of each job. We bring the materials for all of them and work through the list in one visit, which keeps the travel time per job low.

Can I send a photo first?

Yes. A photo via WhatsApp is often enough to tell you how we would tackle a job and roughly how long it takes. For larger carpentry we still come and look, because the condition of the wood or the wall only shows on site.

Do you supply materials?

Yes. Timber, skirting boards, hinges, locks, fixings, filler and paint we buy and list in the quote. If you have already bought a door, a TV bracket or furniture, we fit what you have.

Do you do electrical or plumbing work?

No. We don't install or move sockets, switches, lighting circuits, pipes or taps. We do the carpentry and mounting around them, such as boxing in pipes or mounting a TV next to an existing socket. For electrical or plumbing work, please use a certified installer.

Do I need my landlord's permission?

Often, yes. Drilling holes, mounting a TV, replacing a door or changing anything on the outside of a rented home usually needs your landlord's permission. Check your rental agreement or ask your landlord before we start. In an apartment, changes to the outside may also need approval from the VvE.

Can you mount my TV on the wall?

Yes, on a wall that can carry it. We check whether the wall is brick, concrete or plasterboard, use the right fixings and look for pipes and cables before drilling. Cables can go in a cable duct on the wall. We don't install new sockets or wiring inside the wall.

Do you assemble IKEA and other flat-pack furniture?

Yes. Wardrobes, beds, cabinets and desks, and where the instructions require it we fix tall furniture to the wall. It is a good job to combine with others, such as hanging shelves or curtain rails.

Can you hang a door I bought myself?

Yes. We fit the door into the existing frame, cut in the hinges and lock, and lacquer the cut edges. Tell us which door it is when you send the request, so we bring the right hinges and lock.

My door sticks. Does it need to be replaced?

Usually not. Often the hinges have dropped or the wood has taken up moisture. We adjust the hinges first and only plane the door if needed. The planed edge we lacquer again straight away.

Do you repair rotten window frames and sills?

Yes. Small patches we repair with epoxy, larger parts we replace with new wood in the same profile. How we do that is explained on the page about wood rot repair.

Do you put up fences and garden gates?

Yes. We put up new posts and boards or panels, replace loose posts and rehang garden gates. On request we stain or paint the fence at the same time.

Do you fill holes and cracks before I move out?

Yes. We fill plug holes and cracks, sand them smooth and paint the wall, so the home is ready for the handover. For whole rooms see interior painting.

Do you also paint the new wood?

Yes, that is why many clients ask us for carpentry. New wood is primed on the same day and then finished in two coats, in the colour of the rest of the house.

Do you work for landlords and property managers?

Yes. For example small repairs, doors and skirting boards between two tenants, or replacing sills across a whole block. More about that on our business page (in Dutch).

How quickly can you come?

We respond to your request within one business day and plan the visit at a time that suits you. When the work itself can start depends on the planning and on the delivery time of the materials.

Which areas do you work in?

Delft and a radius of roughly 45 kilometres around it, including The Hague, Rijswijk, Zoetermeer, Leiden, the Westland, Schiedam and Vlaardingen. The full list is on the service area page (in Dutch).
